Treaty 6 Territory

I am an Edmonton based (Western Canada), black and white photographer.  And I am also an anthropologist.  With a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia I specialize in researching heritage, art, religion, morality, and identity formation.

For my Ph.D. dissertation I conducted extensive fieldwork in Bangkok, Thailand.  It was there that my journey as a black and white photographer also began.  Over two and half years (2016-2019), I explored Bangkok with a camera in hand.

This period was a time of great change in Thai history.  The future of Thailand was in the air as political and social powers sought to define the nation’s next chapter.  And so I spent those years walking the streets, trying to capture that flux.  When I returned home, I left Thailand with a laptop full of interviews to translate into English; I also left with a personal style of high contrast, moody images.

When I look back at the body of work I created over those years, I see how I was drawn to the power of black and white.  Specifically, its ability to evoke and stir deep feelings within.  My practice as a photographer continues to explore that power.

While I publicly advocate for anthropology in a website designed to improve people’s travels, (Anthropologist Gone Rogue), this website is about my creative endeavours as a black and white photographer.  It’s here that I wish to share with you a sustained effort to create evocative images.

Thank you for visiting!
